Working from the Ludlow, MA Regional office location, this position assists the Regional supervisor in accomplishing the fund raising goals of the Funds Development and Marketing (FDM) program of Church World Service. She/he assists with the development and implementation of Regional resource development activities in support of the overall work of the agency as outlined in the Field Staff Roles and Expectations document.
Within the scope of the Region, the Assistant Field Director is part of a team effort to support a variety of fund raising activities with an emphasis on the organization of community-based special events—i.e., CROP Hunger Walks—through volunteer networks. Other primary fund raising activities include seeking funds from congregations, women’s groups, and others in support of CWS Congregational Programs, CWS Kit Program, and other CWS program initiatives. In partnership with other regional staff, the Assistant Field Director assumes responsibility for strategic identification and solicitation of funding from regional family foundation and endowment funds, individual major gifts, and organizing fundraising initiatives on regional college and university campuses in support the work of CWS. Integral to the fund raising efforts is the education of various constituencies about the issues of hunger, poverty, and its related causes and interpreting CWS’s response.
The exempt position requires an average 60 percent time allocated to relationship building and direct fundraising with volunteers and various other constituencies, including intensive and intentional travel within the assigned Region, as well as event management and follow-up. The remaining 40% time on average is allocated to Regional program planning, office administration, constituent services, and reporting. Occasional travel to attend Area and national management and training meetings is expected. The ability to work a typical work week averaging 45-50 hours, including evenings and weekends, is required. She/he must have a valid automobile operator’s license.
CROP Hunger Events Fund Raising:
- Consult and interact with congregational, campus, and community leaders (clergy groups, local hunger agencies, congregations, schools, civic groups, etc.) to recruit and equip identified key volunteers to plan, organize, and promote CROP Hunger Walks, set goals, and evaluate results.
- As informed by overall Walk fund raising priorities, focus at least 50 percent of direct Walk fund raising time—with the majority of that time allocated to on-site presence—in counties and communities identified as having the greatest potential for enhanced and/or new participation and income generation.
- In coordination with the Regional staff team, develop organizing and fund raising event plans for campus (college, university, seminary, etc.) communities in the Region, capitalizing on existing relationships and identifying areas for growth and new opportunities.
- Plan and lead Walk leadership training sessions to equip and enhance volunteers’ community organizing, public speaking, and program interpretation skills as a way of maximizing outreach efforts.
- Ensure all event-related support documents (committee lists, local allocation requests, insurance requests, material orders, etc.) are submitted on schedule and income from events in the Region are appropriately and accurately accounted for.
Other Fund Raising:
- Interpret and promote the CWS Congregational and Kit Programs with congregations, women’s groups, campuses, and other interested groups.
- In coordination with the Regional staff team and in compliance with organizational policy and practice, develop strategies and plans to identify, research, and solicit funding from regional small family foundations and congregational and organizational endowment funds.
- Promote and seek congregational alternative gifts, organizational and corporate gifts, and matching gifts.
- Collaborate with the assigned Development Associate in the identification and cultivation of major donors. Promote Planned and Monthly Giving Programs.
- Participate in the development of a Regional emergency response plan and contact list to facilitate immediate action in the event of a national/international disaster.
- Work with other CWS staff and volunteers to develop new and innovative fund raising programs and strategies.
- Interpret and promote CWS programs and related global issues in various congregational and community settings through public speaking and writing opportunities, and the use of CWS programmatic, educational, and advocacy resources.
- Encourage, prepare and/or lead CWS international travel experiences for event volunteers and other constituents.
- Assist with the design and writing of Area/Regional constituent e-communications and evaluate their effectiveness in consultation with FDM communicators.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of relationships with secular and denominational media and prepare news releases when appropriate.
- Cultivate and maintain a social media presence and fan-base in support of the regional program and activities in conformance with organizational protocols.
- Further develop and maintain a regional constituent database that supports the electronic communications sent from the regional office.
- Ensure that all Regional communication efforts are consistent with the CWS Style Guide and conform to organizational protocols.
- Assist with the annual evaluation, planning, and budgeting process for the Region. Quarterly review progress toward achievement of goals with supervisor. Provide feedback and adjust work plan as needed.
- Participate in regular Regional and Area staff meetings. Attend national training and staff events as scheduled. Respond promptly to communication requests from supervisors.
- Communicate and consult, as necessary and required, with supervisor and other appropriate organizational staff on personnel, programmatic, financial or other issues related to the Regional program.
- Participate in periodic performance reviews.
- Review Regional income and expense reports monthly to ensure expenditures and other Regional activities are in accordance with approved annual budgets and program plans.
- Prepare and submit to supervisor accurate and timely monthly expense statement reports and time sheet.
Perform other related duties and special projects as requested.
Education: Undergraduate degree in related field.
Experience: Minimum three years of proven experience in multiple fundraising methods, i.e., with individuals, community-based events, regional family foundations and corporations. Knowledge and experience in cultivating and soliciting for major and planned gifts also desirable. Skills in constituent engagement, volunteer management, program/project management, and office administration are required. Strong motivational interpersonal and public verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively. Previous employment and/or volunteer experience with a non-profit and/or faith-based organization is useful.
Other Requirements: Must possess ability to think creatively and strategically; demonstrate initiative, be self motivated and function independently; work within a team environment; and be flexible. Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheet, database, electronic, Internet, Intranet, and social networking applications required. Must have a valid automobile operator’s license.
Communications: Demonstrate “transparency of information” by articulating program strategies, priorities, standards and expectations to volunteers and stakeholders. Communicate by example a personal commitment to CWS values. Assess the quality of communications relative to regional fund raising and education programs and recommend revisions. Represent CWS in varied forums, effectively interpreting its mission, values and programs and inspiring audiences to support its work. Understand the importance of good media relations and demonstrate comfort and confidence in communicating with media representatives, as assigned. Conduct dealings with local stakeholders with integrity and sensitivity, ensuring all relevant information is clearly communicated and documented.
Constituent Relationships: Manage relationships with stakeholders and work within their structure to identify programmatic linkages, implement services and activities, and coordinate resolutions to problems. Identify potential constituents with whom to build relationships within the context of CWS’s mission, values and policies. Resolve issues of concern to maintain effective constituent relationships.
Job Knowledge: Understand the faith-based nature of CWS and articulate that nature to varied audiences. Know “broad stroke” information about CWS programs and services and where to find more detailed information. Apply a depth of knowledge within area of responsibility to implement assigned activities. Use technology in varied, creative ways to support individual and program performance. Identify learning opportunities for self and others and take/recommend action. Interpret CWS’s policies and procedures for staff and stakeholders, keeping the “human” side in sight. Keep up to date with “best practices” and recommend procedures that balance business performance with CWS’s ministry and values. Model creative and effective use of technology.
Leadership: Communicate and model CWS’s mission, values and priorities to staff and stakeholders. Share changes in priorities with staff and stakeholders, providing guidance to assist them in responding effectively. Identify problems that undermine the effectiveness of a program. Identify and recommend workable solutions for program-wide problems, considering the costs, benefits and potential consequences to CWS. Enable others to learn from the problem-solving experience by involving them in examining and resolving problems, ensuring solutions are appropriate to the scope of the problem.
Program Planning and Management: In collaboration with supervisor, implement and evaluate fund raising and program activities, establishing budget, implementation steps and time frames. Assure staff and volunteers understand their roles in supporting goals. Contribute to the development of standards and expectations for performing activities and assure the quality of work produced. Participate in gathering and analyzing information from internal and external stakeholders. Make time-sensitive, independent decisions affecting outcomes of program activities. Build consensus with colleagues, stakeholders and management in support of new initiatives. Successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously. Invite critical analysis and perspectives from stakeholders and share their recommendations with supervisors as a means to improve Regional fundraising effectiveness.
Resource Building and Stewardship: Participate in planning the budget needed for program activities. Manage relationships with partners to assure continued support. Develop opportunities to build support for CWS among new partners. Manage staff, volunteers and systems to make sure resources are used effectively. Keep current in fundraising techniques and manage activities to maximize potential for resource building. Promote CWS’s mission, programs and services and inspire people to support them. Use entrepreneurial practices to identify new revenue streams and new ways to support CWS’s work. Interpret CWS’s policies on stewardship and accountability for its resources to the public.
Teamwork: Contribute program expertise to the work performed by the team. Promote effective interactions among team members and facilitate group discussion. Establish clear expectations regarding team work assignments and assist staff in balancing priorities.
